The Kandyan kingdom, the last bastion of the Sri Lankan political power against the colonial forces, is the home for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the site of one of the world’s most impressive annual festivals - the Esala Perahera. The Temple contains the most sacred relic of the Buddhists today and the most precious of Sinhalese pride. The upper storey houses the sacred relic and a library containing 800 year old palm leaf religious manuscripts. The Pooja (ceremonies of veneration) are held at dawn and dusk daily and these are moments when the Temple comes to life with pilgrims making offerings of flowers amidst clouds of incense and the beating of traditional ritual drums. The city is visually rich with its narrow streets lined with characterful old buildings. The market has a good display of traditional arts and craft, textiles and gems & jewellery. The lake built by the last Sinhala King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1798 is still a focal attraction. In the evening witness a cultural show of traditional Sri Lankan performing arts, featuring a series of ritual dances and fire walking. Return back to hotel. Rest of the day free at leisure. Home to over 4000 species of indigenous and foreign plants, the 60 hectare Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya comprise of many attractively tended sections including The Flower Garden, The Spice Garden, The Orchid House, The Lake, as well as a wonderful collection of bamboo and palms. The area where the Botanic Gardens stand was first a pleasure garden of the Kandyan kings since 1371. It was established as the Botanic Gardens by the British in 1821. In that period, the key function of the Gardens was to conduct research into and introduce economic crops such as cinnamon, coffee and rubber. Currently, the Garden’s functions include authenticating and conserving plants, managing and developing the National Herbarium, providing educational opportunities to the public as well as promoting domestic floriculture and horticulture. Thereafter, proceed to Pinnawala. Visit the Elephant Orphanage. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is established on a 25 acre coconut plantation adjacent to the Maha Oya River. The Orphanage was founded in 1975 in order to protect and provide care and sanctuary to orphaned elephants that were found in the wild. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2012, there were 78 elephants from 3 generations living in the Orphanage. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants at close quarters from the broad river bank as the herd interact socially, bathing and playing.
